Climate Action Kids' Strike - Kids should defy PM’s school lecture says Bandt

Students planning to participate in a national school strike this Friday calling for emergency action on climate change should ignore the Prime Minister’s hectoring Question Time speech, Greens Deputy Leader and climate and energy spokesperson, Adam Bandt MP, said today.

Mr Bandt asked the Prime Minister if he would join the Greens in praising the students and if he would meet with some of the students when they come to Parliament this Wednesday. The Prime Minister’s response was an ignorant condescending lecture.

“The PM is unbelievably out of touch with young people, not only in Australia but around the world,” Mr Bandt said.

“These students want a leader to protect their future, but they got a hectoring, ungenerous and condescending rebuke from someone even worse than Tony Abbott.

“Students and young people are striking this Friday because governments have failed them in Australia and around the world.

“I met with some of these courageous young people from my electorate last week and I am proud to be their local MP and I am proud of their actions.

“Labor’s approval of another giant coal mine for the Galilee Basin shows they are just as out of touch with the mood of young Australians.”

Proud to see students acting on climate change

Students planning to participate in a national school strike this Friday calling for emergency action on climate change should ignore the Prime Minister's patronising speech on the matter, said Member for Ballina and Greens NSW Education spokesperson Tamara Smith MP.

"The idea that schools and students should have less activism - how incredibly out of touch is the Prime Minister to suggest that young people are not activists in their own right?" said Ms Smith.

"Has Scott Morrison not talked to Year 6 students lately? I have found as the Member for Ballina and as a teacher that it is children and young people who have the most passionate concerns about the environment, climate change and inequalities in society.

"Instead of shaming young people for wanting to have their voices heard, the Prime Minister should be welcoming the input of children and young people, since the future belongs to them.

"I'm very disappointed in the NSW Minister for Education for taking such a draconian approach to the voices of young people and their absolute right to draw attention to their future on a warming planet.

"Many students will be striking for climate action around NSW and around Australia. There will be a large event in Sydney this Friday and I will be supporting students from my electorate during their School Strike on Friday at Railway Park at Byron Bay. I am proud to be their local MP.

"Labor's approval of another giant coal mine for the Galilee Basin shows they are just as out of touch with the mood of young Australians," said Ms Smith.

Greens back young people striking for climate action

South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young stands in solidarity with the young people striking for climate action in Adelaide today.

"The young people striking today give me great hope that the planet will be in good hands in the future, but we need to pass on something worth fighting for," Senator Hanson-Young said.

"Queensland is on fire, Sydney is under water and farmers are facing extreme drought. Young people are showing more leadership on climate change than the Morrison Government.

"While young people strike, the WWF has concluded that Australia has the worst biodiversity management record out of 100 nations. We have a responsibility to future generations, to our unique flora and fauna, and to the rest of the world to lead the charge on saving this planet.

"Our nation is experiencing the effects of climate change here and now. If we want the young people protesting in Adelaide to have a bright future on a liveable planet, politicians need to do their jobs now."
