Four Climate Change Investments Hiding in Plain Sight: Medium

There is a wealth of companies from which to choose

In my article Winning at Climate Change Investing, I broke down the different technology stages for companies involved in this business into Evolutionary Applications, Novel Adaptations, and Revolutionary Developments. I have written about a company that I believe to be just on the cusp between a Novel Adaptation and a Revolutionary Development: Carbon Engineering. Today, I wanted to focus my attention on a few companies in the Evolutionary Application category.

These are companies that are improving present products or processes to allow current systems to operate more efficiently.
One company at which I have been looking is Shiloh Industries SHLO. This is a small-cap name that focuses on material sciences and design changes to specialize in creating strong, lightweight auto components. While this may not strike you as a climate change related business, by decreasing the weight of automobiles, fuel-efficiency is improved for gas-powered vehicles and range increases for electric ones.

We Ignore Thousands of Threatened Plant Species at Our Own Peril : EcoWatch

This Hawaiian species threatened with extinction
"Yet, a lot of Earth's flora is at risk of vanishing completely. More than 20 percent of the world's known plant species, or one in five, are threatened with extinction, a 2016 study by experts at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London found.

Gordon, who was not involved in the study, said that unless we take dramatic action, that figure is "unlikely to improve" due to the continued stresses that all of the world's species, including humans, are facing.

Some of the biggest threats identified in the Kew study include agricultural destruction (such as livestock farming and palm oil production); biological resource use (logging, gathering terrestrial plants); residential and commercial development; and invasive and problematic species. Climate change is also a growing threat."

Climate Adaptation Isn’t Surrender. It’s Survival: WIRED

"Here’s an unpopular opinion in some circles: We are going to have to use technology to adapt to the worst effects of climate change." ........

..... "Those who invest in climate adaptation technology with the dream of scaling companies for massive returns will have to be wary that they don’t worsen the social and political problems that underlie so much of the climate conversation already: The rich spew pollution, the poor are suffering as a result, and a fancy new tech solution might only be available to the rich polluters anyway.

But that doesn’t mean tech can’t make a huge difference, or that adaptation shouldn’t be done. The change is here, the need is real, and the solutions can come from any entrepreneur, any investor, any scientists or would-be startup CEO. It’s time for tech to get in the game. There’s no more time to waste."

Large potential reduction in economic damages under UN mitigation targets: Nature IJS

"International climate change agreements typically specify global warming thresholds as policy targets1, but the relative economic benefits of achieving these temperature targets remain poorly understood2,3

Uncertainties include the spatial pattern of temperature change, how global and regional economic output will respond to these changes in temperature, and the willingness of societies to trade present for future consumption.

Here we combine historical evidence4 with national-level climate5 and socioeconomic6 projections to quantify the economic damages associated with the United Nations (UN) targets of 1.5 °C and 2 °C global warming, and those associated with current UN national-level mitigation commitments (which together approach 3 °C warming7)."

Why Growth Can’t Be Green

"New data proves you can support capitalism or the environment — but it’s hard to do both."

"But ending growth doesn’t mean that living standards need to take a hit. Our planet provides more than enough for all of us; the problem is that its resources are not equally distributed. We can improve people’s lives right now simply by sharing what we already have more fairly, rather than plundering the Earth for more. Maybe this means better public services. Maybe it means basic income. Maybe it means a shorter working week that allows us to scale down production while still delivering full employment. Policies such as these — and countless others — will be crucial to not only surviving the 21st century but also flourishing in it."

Research: Young people's burden: requirement of negative CO2 emissions: ESD

Global surface temperatures
"Continued high fossil fuel emissions unarguably sentences young people to either a massive, implausible cleanup or growing deleterious climate impacts or both."

Scientists overwhelmingly agree that our climate is changing, Earth is getting warmer, sea levels are rising, and it's primarily because of humans putting lots of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Whether you already trust in the science, you're undecided, or you disagree with what all this, this video is for you!

New U.S. Climate Assessment Forecasts Dire Effects On Economy, Health: NPR

"The Trump administration released a major climate assessment on Black Friday, the culmination of years of research by the country's top climate scientists. It's well over 1,000 pages and touches on a daunting range of topics.

President Trump said Monday that he has read parts of it. "It's fine," he told reporters at the White House, although he said he doesn't believe the report's assessment that climate change will cause devastating economic impacts for the U.S."
