Pandemic lands 'worst body blow' in modern history on fossil fuel companies (excerpt): Yale Climate Connections

 "......“Serious stress, serious stress.”

“An industry in its last days.”

“Steady decline [in growth, demand] for the past decade.”

“Cratering.”

Those are a few of the characterizations of today’s oil, natural gas, and coal industries put forward by several independent journalists, writers, and analysts in the new edition of the “This is Not Cool” video series.

… And then, along came the coronavirus and the COVID-19 challenges, providing one more blow to the energy industry.

Even pre-pandemic, the conventional energy sector “already had plans to cancel major infrastructure projects like pipelines,” independent journalist Keith Schneider told Yale Climate Connections. And with the pandemic, oil and gas experienced “the worst body blow in its modern contemporary history,” he said.

Journalist and writer Antonia Juhasz agrees, pointing to “an industry in its last days, it’s just getting hit from too many sides.”

“Most of the new electricity generation coming online today is coming from wind and solar,” says Houston Chronicle reporter Chris Tomlinson. And professor Dan Kammen of the University of California Berkeley says solar and wind have been the cheapest energy options worldwide for at least the past three consecutive years.

Kammen also says that he believes solar and wind energy initiatives can advance two to three times as many job opportunities as traditional fossil fuel projects: That would be critical to help long-time coal and other fossil fuel industry employees whose decades of work has been critical to economic development … and who society cannot simply leave stranded as momentum turns toward a clean economy. Tending to the plight of those workers whose jobs are lost will have to be part of the energy-options puzzle, interviewees say."..."

Video - 'We're just flaring a tremendous amount of gas': Oil executives in leaked recording share their REAL views on climate change and burning natural gas while publicly claiming to have emissions under control (excerpt) : Mail Online

Summary from article

"• A discussion by the Independent Petroleum Association of America among oil and gas executives was secretly recorded in June 2019

• In recording they shared their true stances against climate change and their opposition to federal regulation of methane emissions

• Ron Ness, the president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council, said: 'We’re just flaring a tremendous amount of gas. The value of it is very minimal'

• He slammed stronger regulation of natural gas as an 'unnecessary burden'

• Dan Haley, the president of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, suggested the industry use emotional marketing tactics to 'win these battles'

• He said: 'The activists are doing this when they talk about banning fracking in Colorado. They don’t show explosions. They show women and children'

• Comments come as oil and gas leaders are criticized for flaring natural gas, which creates pollution and emits planet-warming greenhouses gases "

Compromised: Genie Energy and the Murdoch media’s climate denial (excerpt): Michael West Media

The TV series 'The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty' will soon be screened on ABC TV.

"Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has been integral to the propaganda war"
Murdoch series coming to ABC TV

"Rupert Murdoch, Dick Cheney, former CIA director James Woolsey, former US Treasury head Larry Summers, former US Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, hedge fund boss Michael Steinhardt and Jacob Rothschild have something in common. They are all on the board of oil and gas explorer, Genie Energy. Gas industry whistleblower Simone Marsh explores Rupert Murdoch’s fossil fuel interests.

Psychological warfare, or psywar, is the use of propaganda against an enemy, supported by such military, economic or political measures as may be required. Such propaganda is generally intended to demoralise the enemy, to break his will to fight or resist, and sometimes render him favourably disposed to one’s position.
"News Corporation has been integral to the propaganda war"
Book: Hack Attack
Psychological warfare, winning the “hearts and minds” of the civil population, has been integral to the climate war.

And Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has been integral to the propaganda war; so much so that its Australian business has come under serious pressure this year amid anger over the coverage of the bushfires by major titles The Australian, the Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, the Courier Mail and Foxtel’s Sky News.

Overnight, Rupert Murdoch’s son James publicly rebuked Murdoch’s Fox News over its climate denialism. Last week, a senior executive, Emily Townsend, took the extraordinary step of going public to criticise her own media organisation for its “dangerous” coverage of climate change.

Behind the propaganda

"Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has been integral to the propaganda war"
Threats to democracy
The Murdoch press has always been avidly in favour of fossil fuels and notorious for spreading doubt about the science of global warming. It is worth looking, therefore, at the formal links between Rupert Murdoch and the oil and gas sector.

For a start, News Corp companies in Australia have extensive commercial arrangements with multinational oil and gas corporations. They take big advertising dollars, although how big remains a secret. Their newspapers stage “roundtables” or corporate conferences at which journalists and executives mingle with fossil fuel executives. Yet, rival media Nine Entertainment and its Australian Financial Review masthead does the same.

Where News is different is in Murdoch’s direct financial interest in oil and gas exploration in the Middle East, investments which also compromise New Corp’s coverage of Middle East politics and Israeli expansionism.

Murdoch has aligned himself with fossil fuel interests globally via the American Australian Association (AAA), and Genie Oil and Gas. Genie oil and gas is a division of Genie Energy and has been involved plans to frack in Israel. Its big project now, however, is exploring for oil in the Golan Heights, which is disputed territory once controlled by Syria."....................................."

Why we need political action to rein in the oil, coal and gas companies | video explainer: The Guardian

The Guardian reveals the 20 fossil fuel companies whose relentless exploitation of the world’s oil, gas and coal reserves can be directly linked to more than one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions in the modern era. Global environment editor, Jonathan Watts, explains how they have continued to expand their operations despite being aware of the industry’s devastating impact on the planet.

Fracking Firms Fail, Rewarding Executives and Raising Climate Fears: NYT

Oil and gas companies are hurtling toward bankruptcy, raising fears that wells will be left leaking planet-warming pollutants, with cleanup costs left to taxpayers.

Credit...Jonah M. Kessel/The New York Times

The day the debt-ridden Texas oil producer MDC Energy filed for bankruptcy eight months ago, a tank at one of its wells was furiously leaking methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. As of last week, dangerous, invisible gases were still spewing into the air.

Hard Times in the Climate Denial Business for the Heartland Institute: DeSmog

"A Failing Business Model?

The oil industry is still spending heavily against policies to address climate change and in support of efforts to promote fossil fuel consumption. These days, however, the messaging and efforts seem to be moving away from Heartland-style denial attacks on climate science and tuned more toward PR campaigns promoting the idea that oil and gas companies accept climate change is happening and are doing their part to address it.

That's likely driven in part by the fact that public awareness of and concern about climate change has significantly increased since 2008.

The industry's new approach appears focused on selling the idea that natural gas is “clean” and that fossil fuels are the future — even a “solution” to climate change. Meanwhile, across the U.S., coal plants are closing, the gas industry is a financial disaster, and renewables are growing rapidly and in many cases can provide electricity more cheaply than gas power plants.

The Cato Institute, another free market think tank that for years pushed climate science denial and received funding from the fossil fuel industry, dropped its climate denial program earlier this year. Cato was founded by the petrochemical billionaire Charles Koch

Will Heartland follow a similar path to attract broader appeal and fossil fuel industry funding?"

Who is Preventing Kids from Learning about Climate Change? :Green Market Oracle

"The reason that climate change is not de rigueur in American schools is largely due to powerful economic interests.  Specifically the fossil fuel industry and Republican legislators whom they help elect.

The fossil fuel industry is at the core of the climate crisis and they have known that they are a leading cause of climate change for decades. In a bid to retain their economic power they have declared war on science and sought to subvert the truth through a diverse array of sophisticated campaigns.

The oil and gas industry uses their tremendous wealth to buy politicians and political outcomes. Their immense financial clout is also used to buy scientists and control academia.

Campaign finance is one of the most powerful weapons they have deployed in their war against the facts. The GOP has been working for the fossil fuel industry for years, and in the age of Trump they have consolidated their control over Republicans.

Disinformation is disseminated through lobbyists, think-tanks and front groups. One of the most pernicious purveyors of climate denial is the fossil fuel funded Heartland Group. They promote policy that supports industry and their disinformation campaigns target kids in public schools. They provide "educational" materials (textbooks and lesson plans) that try to circumvent the facts about anthropogenic climate change.

Their lies have been deeply ingrained in the nation's political discourse on education. Such disinformation has prompted a number of state legislators to question whether kids should be given access to the facts about climate change. In Idaho legislators said kids should not be taught that climate change is caused by human activity."

Just 10% of fossil fuel subsidy cash 'could pay for green transition' : The Guardian

"Switching just some of the huge subsidies supporting fossil fuels to renewables would unleash a runaway clean energy revolution, according to a new report, significantly cutting the carbon emissions that are driving the climate crisis.

Coal, oil and gas get more than $370bn (£305bn) a year in support, compared with $100bn for renewables, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) report found. Just 10-30% of the fossil fuel subsidies would pay for a global transition to clean energy, the IISD said."

Fossil fuel exports make Australia one of the worst contributors to climate crisis : The Guardian

Australia looking to become an emissions superpower, the Australian Conservation Foundation says

Australia is responsible for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and could be contributing as much as 17% by 2030 if the pollution from its fossil fuel exports is factored in, research says.

Under climate accounting rules that record carbon dioxide released within a country, Australia is responsible for about 1.4% of global emissions. The analysis by science and policy institute Climate Analytics found more than twice that, another 3.6%, are a result of Australia’s coal, oil and gas exports.

Article Comments (5) NJ could need 2,700 miles of sea walls to defend against rising waters: NJ Spotlight

"New study says building defenses along Jersey Shore would cost billions and suggests the fossil-fuel industry should pay

sandy sea level rise
New Jersey would have to pay almost $25 billion to build almost 2,700 miles of seawalls to protect its coastal communities from anticipated sea-level rise by 2040, according to the latest study on the state’s vulnerability to rising ocean levels.

The Center for Climate Integrity, a Washington, DC-based advocacy group, said New Jersey faces the sixth-biggest bill for sea-wall construction of any state, while low-lying Cumberland County would have to pay the most — $5.8 billion for 532 miles of seawalls — among New Jersey’s counties."

'Time is not on our side': Big Oil is bracing for future after petrol: SMH

oil companies, petrol, diesel, climate change, economic impact, corporations, fossil fuel industry,
Aramco's Amin Nasser
"Saudi Arabia is bowing to the inevitable. Aramco, the state-owned oil giant, is launching radical plans to switch its oil output from cars to petrochemical use over the next decade, implicitly accepting that the curtain is coming down on the era of petrol and diesel.

Amin Nasser, head of the giant state producer, said the global oil industry "faces a crisis of perception" and is failing to convince the opinion elites - or rising millennials - it has any place in a world imperilled by climate change.

"Time is not on our side," he told the annual IP Week gathering of oil and gas chiefs in London. "Our stakeholders are clearly tuning out. There is a worrying and growing belief among policymakers and regulators, investment houses, and NGOs, that we are an industry with little or no future."

1.5°C = Zero Fossil Fuels: 350.org

Keep global warming below 1.5 degrees C
1.5 degrees heating
It’s simple — to keep global warming below 1.5°C, coal, oil + gas needs to stay in the ground.

On October 8, 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a special report on keeping warming below 1.5°C. It was a wake-up call to the world that the window for avoiding runaway climate change is closing — fast.

To have any chance of staying under 1.5°C of warming, no new fossil fuel project can be allowed to go ahead.
The fossil fuel industry is knowingly causing the climate crisis. Every institution and every single level of government has a role to play in stopping this reckless industry before it’s too late.

We must demand that all institutions withdraw their support from the fossil fuel industry — be that investments, sponsorships, subsidies or permits — and stand up to the industry before it’s too late.

Good climate news: the fossil fuel industry is weaker than ever

Some rare good climate news: the fossil fuel industry is weaker than ever

If you’re looking for good news on the climate front, don’t look to the Antarctic. Last week’s spate of studies documenting that its melt rates had tripled is precisely the kind of data that underscores the almost impossible urgency of the moment.

And don’t look to Washington DC, where the unlikely survival of the EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, continues to prove the political power of the fossil fuel industry. It’s as if he’s on a reality show where the premise is to see how much petty corruption one man can get away with.

But from somewhat less likely quarters, there’s been reason this month for hope – reason, at least, to think that the basic trajectory of the world away from coal and gas and oil is firmly under way.

Roger Hollander Blog 2016 Allegation: 'Criminal Exxon: Climate Change Denial'

Roger’s note: Marx said that capitalism isn’t viable because it is unable to sustain a livable society.  Nothing is more true today.  The political leaders of the nations of the world got together in Paris and outlined a plan to halt climate change.  It was not the most ambitious plan, but even that plan has zero chance of implementation.  BIG OIL simply won’t allow it.  Whether it be dictators or democratically elected leaders, they are powerless to save the planet because they do not call the shots.

Exxon and other oil companies pay the same PR firms and right wing front groups that helped tobacco companies lie about the risks of smoking.

Tobacco and oil lobbyist are one and the same.

Pulitzer Prize-nominated reporting shows that Exxon has known that burning oil and gas causes catastrophic climate change as far back as 1977.

...man has a time window of five to ten years before the need for hard decisions regarding changes in energy strategies might become critical.

But by the 1990s, Exxon had instead started funding climate disinformation at a massive scale.

7exy

All designed to spread confusion about the urgency of climate change and keep their profits high.

Three states (and counting) are investigating Exxon for misleading shareholders about the risks of climate change.
So now Exxon acknowledges human-caused climate change and even claims to support a carbon tax.”

In the Los Angeles Times, Exxon wrote that they support a carbon tax.

But in reality, Exxon is quietly blocking progress. The company remains a major funder of denial-promoting groups, including the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

ALEC opposes a carbon tax and misinforms state lawmakers about climate change. But without Exxon’s funding, ALEC would lose influence fast.

Come clean and leave ALEC.

Producing carbon emissions is dangerous. But Exxon is producing something else just as dangerous: climate change denial.

Denial is slowing our transition to cleaner energy and harming vulnerable communities.

Exxon continues to spend $27 million a year to spread denial and block climate action.

All eyes will be on Exxon at its annual shareholder meeting in Dallas on May 25, so we need to act fast.

Tell Exxon to come clean and leave the denial-promoting American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
